Skylte

Our name says it all.
We are often asked about the origin of the name 'Skylte'. The spelling is similar to the Afrikaans word 'skuilte', which means shelter, but why the purposeful misspelling?

Well spotted! 'Skylte' is a term taken from a publication of Griqua Psalms curated by Professor Hans du Plessis. The Griqua are a subgroup of South Africa's multiracial Coulored people and the Psalms were written in phonetic Afrikaans to denote the singular pronunciation of their particular dialect. The name of the book, "Innie Skylte Van Die Jirre", translates to "in the shelter of the Lord".

We were drawn to the honest nature of the Psalms. It was guileless and sincere, much like the atmosphere we wished to create at our residence. Skylte is a place where you can live, love and laugh without any pretence in the safety of the Lord. So when somebody points out that the name is spelled incorrectly, we simply tell them 'Dis die Jirre se Skylte’.
