Tramway Football Club

General information

Tramway FC is one of the oldest soccer clubs in Cape Town, South Africa. The club is a founding and affiliate member of the Cape Town Tygerberg league football association (CTTFA), the largest LFA in Cape Town. Celebrating its 90 year existence in 2013, Tramway FC has been successfully transformed to become one of the most diverse sporting clubs in Cape Town. The club’s large junior and senior division is represented by community members from diverse socioeconomic, racial and religious backgrounds. In fact, Tramway FC was the first club to bring women’s soccer to South Africa more than 40 years ago. The club's 1st team currently competes in the CTTFA Premier League.

The club’s large junior division caters from the under-7 to under -19 age groups. Since 2012, this division has seen massive growth through dynamic leadership and a complete restructuring process. We have formed strategic partnerships with surrounding schools, local business, educational institutions and local government. In 2013, we entered 4 under-7, 4 under-9, 2 under-11, 1 under-13, 1 under-15, 1 under-17 and 1 under-19 team in the CTTFA junior leagues. We focus on long term player development and actively promote the multiple benefits of sport (eg improved health and wellness, life skills). Whilst winning is enjoyable, our juniors are not focussed on “winning at all cost”. Our motto is to be Fair, have Fun and be a Friend. Through utilising international evidence-based soccer training techniques, we focus on skill development and soccer intelligence. Whilst winning has not been our primary focus, our junior teams have been incredibly successful over the last few years. Our junior players are not under pressure to perform and enjoy playing the beautiful game amongst their family and friends.

In 2013, the junior division pioneered an innovative adult health and wellness programme for the family members of junior players. This successful project was run during junior soccer training and saw entire families coming down to our sports complex to engage in physical activity and health living. All participants underwent free health screening and had supervised “boot camp” styled training and health counselling by a professional medical team including a biokinetisist, psychologist, medical practitioner and dietitian. This programme was offered at no cost to participants.

Tramway FC is run by community volunteers who devote several hours of their personal time for the benefit of our youth and community. Our club is a home to everyone and no one is excluded on financial grounds or other. In fact, our annual junior membership fees are the lowest in the CTTFA. Many of our junior players come from extremely disadvantaged backgrounds and are fully supported by the club. We welcome all new members and any form of donation or support to assist us with our various youth upliftment programmes.
