About Ian Arendse:
Cape Town is the home and birthplace of Sensei Ian Arendse, whose love of the Martial Arts led him in search of a Martial Arts School. He found Shukokai karate in 1973 and trained under Sensei Herbie Mongale, a member of the Springbok Team from 1977 to 1983. Having been awarded the best student in his three previous gradings, Sensei Ian was awarded his black belt in 1983 and moved to train with Sensei Chris Thompson. In 1986 he trained with movie stars Chuck Norris, Nasty Anderson, Billy Blanks (Tae Bo) and Bill (Super Foot) Wallace (USA). In 1997 he trained with the last ninja Grand Master, Master Masaaki Hatsumi (Japan). In 1999 he trained with esteemed instructors Sensei Mario Higoanna (Gojo Ryu), Master Hirokazu Kanazawa and twice world kumite (Fighting) champion Murakami from shotakan (Japan) in 2000. His experience in Traditional Karate such as Shukokai, Goju Ryu and Shotokan, as well as non-traditional styles such as kickboxing, grappling and Tai Boxing has contributed to his level of mastery. He is also a personal fitness trainer and teaches Kick Box Fitness, a program which integrates Kick Boxing, Thai Boxing and Karate.

Sensei Ian has successfully competed at both provincial and national levels and was selected from the 1996 South African Team to compete in USA. The Shorin-Ji School of Karate was founded in Bergvliet in 1999 by Sensei Ian Arendse. The School has grown to be an esteemed Karate School, training both adults and Children in the Martial Arts.
