General information

As a Centre of Excellence in Cooperative and Work Integrated Education (CWIE) SASCE advocates and promotes co-operative education throughout Africa between academic institutions, the business world and community organizations.
SASCE was originally created by the South African Committee of Technikon Principals (CTP) in 1984 as an organization dedicated to supporting individuals and institutions in integrating academic studies with quality work integrated learning initially focusing on ‘in-service training’ and internal issues involved with cooperative education. The society has grown substantially since 1984 and has established several international links. In 2003 SASCE expanded its horizons and changed its name to the Southern Africa Society for Co-operative Education (SASCE).
In 2009 SASCE started on a transformation journey towards a more dynamic and sustainable Non-Profit Organisation that is a Centre of Excellence for Cooperative and Work Integrated Education(CWIE) in Africa with the student employability at the centre of SASCE focus.
The four pillars of our strategy are Advocacy, Research, Capacity Building and coordination of WIL student placement. The government and education/skills related state entities, the industry, the student, the educational institutions, and community are identified as critical SASCE stakeholders in CWIE
The encouraging developments since the beginning of our transformation journey are the creation of Directorate for Work Integrated Learning (WIL) by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in South Africa, the prominence of WIL in the White Paper on Post School Education in South Africa, the launch of “The Africa Journal on CWIE and regular hosting of the prestigious WIL Africa Conferences.
