General information
The Amathole Museum, a Natural and Cultural History Museum, has an international reputation, and is situated in King Williams Town, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. It was founded in 1884.
Idabi lenkululeko eQonce is a permanent installation, telling the story of the Struggle for freedom in this area. Stories are recounted by people who lived through the Bhisho Massarce, forced removals and the UDF. You can hear the recordings with the use of QR codes on your smart phone.
The Xhosa Gallery displays depicts aspects of Historical Xhosa life.
Not to be missed exhibitions include Huberta the wandering hippo, and the small, and big, five of the Animal Kingdom
Behind the doors of historic buildings, the museum houses material which is of great scientific, historical and anthropological value to researchers.
The name of the museum has changed twice. In the spirit of transformation, the name was changed in 1999 from Kaffrarian to Amathole. The latter term refers to calves on the Mathole mountains.
