General information

Cape Agulhas Municipality is classified as a category B municipality situated within the Overberg. The demarcated municipal area covers approximately 2411km² and includes the towns of Bredasdorp, Napier and the coastal towns of Arniston, Struisbaai, L’Agulhas and Suiderstrand as well as a vast area of surrounding rural properties including the rural dense areas of Elim, Klipdale and Protem.

Cape Agulhas Municipality can be regarded as the southernmost local municipality in Africa. Its coastline is surrounded by the Atlantic and Indian oceans which meet at the most southern town in Africa, named L’Agulhas. Cape Agulhas Municipality borders the municipalities of Swellendam, Theewaterskloof and Overstrand. Both the administration headquarters of CAM and the ODM is situated in Bredasdorp.

The area can be reached from the City of Cape Town side via the N2 national road over the Sir Lowry’s and Houw Hoek Passes in the west connecting with the R316 route from Caledon to Napier. The area can also be reached from the eastern side via Swellendam connecting the R319 route to Bredasdorp. The map below indicates the different routes to the area.
