Grangehurst is a specialist red wine cellar on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain midway between Stellenbosch and Somerset West. Established by Jeremy Walker on his father's squash court in 1992, the winery has since evolved to a moderately sized 140 ton cellar, capable of producing about 9,000 cases of wine per year.
Wine-making at Grangehurst is traditional, low-tech and handcrafted- from the picking of the grapes prior to crushing to the labeling and packaging of the wines. Open fermentation tanks (kuipe), punching down of the skins (pigeage), wooden basket presses, French and American oak barrels are still the essential equipment and techniques used in our cellars.
The grapes for Grangehurst wines are sourced from prime vineyards in the coastal areas of Stellenbosch viz. The Helderberg, Firgrove and Greater Simonsberg. The southerly sea breezes that blow over the cool waters of False Bay contribute greatly to the quality of the grapes from these vineyards.
After 10 years of focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage and Merlot, two additional red grape varieties - Shiraz and Petit Verdot - now add a new point of interest and intrigue to the wines of Grangehurst.
A dry rosé also forms part of the range.
