Mathey M L

General information

Dr Mathey completed his M.B., Ch.B and M.Med(Psych) degrees at
the University of Pretoria.
He is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa
and the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom. He is
member of the SA Society of Psychiatrists.
He served on the Executive Committee of the Northern Subgroup of
the SA Society of Psychiatrists (SASOP) for eight years, five of which
he served as Chairman. He was a member of the National Executive
Committee of SASOP for seven years, of which he served four years
as Honorary Secretary.
He has done numerous medical courses, including an Aviation Medical
Examiner's Course and Diving Medical Examiner's Course. He was a
member of the Aviation Medical Panel of the Institute of Aviation Medicine
from 1990 to 2010. He was the consultant psychiatrist to the SA
Civil Aviation Authority and served as a member of the SACAA Aviation
Medical Panel until 2013.
He joined the SA Defence Force in 1982 where he attained the rank of
Colonel and held the post of Chief Specialist (Psychiatrist). He was
Head of the Department of Psychiatry and Chief Psychiatrist of the
SANDF from 1989 to 2010. He has been in part-time private practice
since 1990 and in full-time private practice since 2010. He has done
various locums in the UK as Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult
Psychiatry and Psychiatry of the Elderly.
He regularly gives talks and lectures to medical doctors and other
health professionals on psychiatric matters. He has served on the
Advisory Boards of numerous local pharmaceutical companies. He is
the co-author of the Clinical Guidelines in Primary Psychiatry for the
SA Military Health Services. He has presented papers at local and
international aviation medical congresses.
He is actively involved in psychiatric disability evaluations and RAF
(third party) evaluations. He has acted as chairman of numerous military
medical boards.
