Big Banana Films

General information

Following a successful career as a photojournalist and after 9 years of freelancing as a location scout and manager with the emphasis being on Namibia, Rick Matthews decided to establish Big Banana Films in South Africa, to provide services with access to the rest of Southern Africa apart from Namibia which is handled by Sidewinder Films.

Since its inception in October 1999 , and the 2002 landmark BBC series Walking with Cavemen, Big Banana Films has been involved in the assisting of numerous and diverse productions ranging from commercials to documentaries, corporate, drama reconstructions and still shoots.

Big Banana Films is primarily geared towards facilitating documentaries, drama reconstructions and stills shoots in Southern Africa. We however have expanded our resources and have recently facilitated shoots in India, Russia , Indonesia , Nepal , Mexico , Sweden , Mongolia and Morocco.

We pride ourselves in having probably the largest location reference database in Africa , covering apart from South Africa and Namibia , countries which include , Zimbabwe , Zambia , Mozambique , Botswana , Lesotho , Swaziland , Malawi , Mauritius and the Comores . We also have a small database of Moscow , Turkey , Ghana , Kenya , Zanzibar , Uganda ,Egypt , Jordan , India , Maldives and parts of Indonesia .

Another key asset is our film unit support service. With an extensive array of unit equipment, no job is too small or too big, with some of the largest commercials being filmed in South Africa being part of our impressive resume.

Utilising South Africa's vast film resources and our knowledge of Southern African locations we provide probably every service in the book.
