I get asked what I do on many occasions, I say I am an Industrial Engineer...a blank look and then...what is Industrial Engineering? is it electrical? ...NO... and then comes another blank look...Wow, you must be clever.

So let me help you out if you don't already know.

Industrial engineering is a discipline of engineering that deals with productivity, process and methods. It is highly analytical and borderline obsessive compulsive.

The skills learned in industrial engineering can be, and have been, broadly applied to all areas of business from banking to baking, production to services. It all started during the industrial revolution where demand pressure forced the formulation of production lines, production began to look more organised and automated...and the subject of industrial engineering was born.

Todays industrial engineer likes structure and is taught to look for improvement opportunity around every corner. Just ask my wife!!

So if you have are manufacturing something (or doing anything repetitively) and want to do it cheeper, quicker or better...call an industrial engineer.

I personally like to look at 3 factors with every project; Product Quality, Throughput and Cost.
I analyse factories designs, layouts and methods
Ergonomics and time studies
How well is the factory maintained
How are the executive driving performance and what behaviours are resulting
Are the current practices sustainable and enduring
Where can we save money to improve operating profits
